Issue One: Vulnerability

The Background: Humankind Zine is dedicated to the exploration and celebration of what it truly means to be human through different mediums of art. By providing a platform for creatives, we strive to have viewers and artists connect with each other to form a sense of unity and community. Our goal is to confront the unimaginable, deliberate the unintentional, and elevate the voices of those typically unheard. 

The Idea: For Humankind Zine’s first issue, the theme was Vulnerability.   

Written Prompt or Issue One


Vulnerability (n):  "The quality or state of being exposed to the possibility of being attacked or harmed, either physically or emotionally." - Oxford Dictionary

Vulnerability (n):  "Being willing to express the truth no matter what. The truth of who you are, the essence at your core, what you're feeling at any given moment. It's being able to open up your soul and let it flow so that other people can see their soul in yours." - Oprah Winfrey 

What do you associate vulnerability with? Maybe it’s your greatest fear, a symbol of strength, or common humanity. Brené Brown, a professor and researcher, believes, “What goes wrong for us is a part of our gift to the world. It’s what enables us to connect and be compassionate.” 

She also reflects, "Vulnerability is the very first thing I look for in you, but it's the very last thing I want to show you in me." What does it mean to show your emotions and be raw with others? What outcomes might come from doing so? We're curious to know what vulnerability means to you and the impact it has had on your life.
